20.6 million euros for the floor of its next mega data center in Spain

Just over an hour from Madrid by car, the project is moving at full speed Meta Data Center Campus. The American social media giant already has the land where it will build its next facilities in Europe. These are 190 hectares located in the second phase of the industrial action of Torrehierro, in Talavera de la Reina.

The Public Land Business Entity, attached to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, has materialized this week the sale of the aforementioned space for 20.6 million euros. Meta, however, will pay a higher amount of money. Investments could be around 750 million euros amid Spain’s data center fever.

A new data center in Spain

SEPES assures that the project will be developed with a “sustainable approach and respectful of the pre-existing natural environment.” This comment seems to respond to one of the most sensitive issues surrounding the new data center: the supposed high consumption of water necessary to control the temperature of the complex technological infrastructure that will be installed.

José Julián Gregorio, mayor of Talavera de la Reina, celebrated The progress of the project is expected to create 250 direct jobs and help reactivate the local economy. During the construction process, however, job creation could exceed 1,000 jobs, something that is also very welcomed by government authorities.

To reach this stage, the project has had to overcome several stages, including the approval of the Plan of Singular Interest (PSI) that involved Meta in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. What’s next? Well then, let the events begin construction worksalthough we will probably have to wait months for that to happen.

It is still not clear if the Meta Data Center Campus will be focused on a specific mission, such as artificial intelligence (AI). As El Español points outis expected to have a total of five buildings. Two will be used to house the data center infrastructure while three will be used for administrative work.

Data centers are multiplying in the Spanish territory. Zaragoza will be the home of facilities of the investment fund giant Blackstone. Aermont has taken control of Nabiax, a data center company that belonged to Telefónica. After years of works, Amazon launched its new data centers in Spain in 2022.
