which cars can circulate and which rest on December 14

It’s Saturday and, therefore, it is very likely that you already know what that means: Hoy No Circula Saturday is back. Yes, the day on which the program devised by the CDMX Environment Secretariat (SEDEMA) puts its special restrictions in place.

As you well know, this project seeks to reduce polluting emissions present in the atmosphere and, therefore, improve the air we breathe. How does he do it? This is simple: preventing the circulation of some vehicles. The most polluting ones are, evidently, in the spotlight.

This, of course, forces us to leave some cars at home where restrictions apply. Some limitations that extend through the 16 municipalities in Mexico City and the following suburban municipalities of the State of Mexico:

  • Atizapan of Zaragoza
  • Coacalco de Berriozábal
  • Cuautitlan
  • Cuautitlán Izcalli
  • Chalco
  • Chicoloapan
  • Chimalhuacan
  • Ecatepec de Morelos
  • Huixquilucan
  • Ixtapaluca
  • Peace
  • Naucalpan de Juárez
  • Nezahualcoyotl
  • Nicolas Romero
  • Tecámac
  • Tlalnepantla de Baz
  • Tultitlan
  • Chalco Valley

What cars and license plates does Hoy No Circula Saturday affect?

With all this in mind, what are we talking about with Hoy No Circula? That on some occasions specific cars do rest but, on other days like Saturday, the restrictions change.

These prohibitions use the hologram numbers, as you can see above, and if necessary also the last numbers on the plate. This occurs in cases with hologram 1 and 2.

But on Saturdays there are special restrictions. Thus, the following scenarios occur:

  • Those that can circulate every Saturday
  • Those who have to rest every Saturday
  • Those who rest every other Saturday

This occurs because, as we say, there are vehicles that rotate and, therefore, they may circulate one week and be prohibited the next. Restrictions that, yes, apply between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.. At night, freedom of movement with any car is allowed.

With this clear, what cars can circulate without worrying about what day of the week it is? Cars with hologram 0 and 00. In that case, their owners can forget what is written here because there is no problem in that case.

Neither will owners of cars with hologram 2, although, this time, for a very different reason. Those with hologram 2 cannot circulate on any Saturday of the month. In that case, they do not have to be aware of the Hoy No Circula restrictions.

And finally, there are the cars with hologram 1. In that case, it is the last number on the license plate that determines whether or not we will be able to move. This week we are facing the second Saturday of the month of December, which will force cars with hologram 1 and a license plate ending in an even number to stay home. Next week, those with hologram 1 and an odd-numbered finished plate will be the ones who rest.

Of course, it must be taken into account that there are a series of exceptions that allow the following cars to circulate, regardless of their license plate number or hologram:

  • Those that run on electricity, natural gas or are hybrids
  • Those who have a disabled license plate
  • All those dedicated to urban transportation services (includes funeral homes)
  • Those that offer school or passenger transportation
  • Those intended for public safety and/or civil protection
