In a few months the first anniversary of the Xiaomi SU7 going on sale will be celebrated and, if we take stock, the figures that the brand is achieving with this car border on excellence. And the company already builds one of these cars in just over a minuteabout 40 vehicles an hour thanks to its Xiaomi EV HyperFactory. Tesla does the same in about 30 seconds at its Shanghai Gigafactory, but it is something they have been doing for 16 more years.
To put these figures in context, we are talking about a company that has only been manufacturing cars for eight months, only sells them in China and already has the same production volume as other fairly veteran factories as is the case of the Stellantis group has in Zaragoza. There is only one reason for this: almost complete automation of the entire manufacturing process.
In just 76 seconds a Xiaomi SU7 is ready to reach its owner
It is clear that Xiaomi’s intention is to stand up to other giants like Tesla, and that only involves mass producing cars and offering a relationship between price and product that few can compete with. Curiously, Xiaomi only has one factory located on the outskirts of Beijing, but it has a level of automation that they claim is 91% and that is allowing them to produce cars at an incredible speed.
Xiaomi has assured that, thanks to starting completely from scratch, they have had the opportunity to study the strategy very well when producing vehicles, and Doing it efficiently involved 100% automation of almost the entire process. This factory integrates a large number of robots in practically all its areas, including painting, being able to change the color of a car in just 40 minutes, and that simplifies everything.
Furthermore, another of the magic of this place is that, as it showed us Lei Jun on his official profile on Xhas the Hyper Die-Casting 79100 Cluster. And we are talking about a die-cast block that allows 72 components to be joined in one, thus avoiding the welding of about 840 joints, although, yes, it occupies about 840 m². Even so, it is a very profitable space since it saves a lot of time in the production of the SU7, and that for Xiaomi is completely essential.
At the moment Xiaomi has not yet seriously considered launching its cars outside of China, and is focusing on power produce the greatest number of vehicles in the shortest time possible to match or even surpass the production of brands like Tesla. They will also soon launch their second vehicle, the Xiaomi YU7, so the challenge they have ahead of them in 2025 and years to come is quite big and we will see how they are able to face it.
