The OpenAI advent calendar is demonstrating both the good health and ambition of the company that created ChatGPT. Some may be a bit meh, but others show that they want to be who sets the pace of AI and that it has come to stay and flood everything. Because it seems that artificial intelligence is just the beginning.
If you see one by one all the surprises of those ’12 days of OpenAI’, with some gems such as the arrival of ChatGPT to WhatsApp as another contact or directly, a call away, what you see is that ChatGPT is going to be an application for everything and everyone. A super app. Stick with the name because it is the obsession of several influential people in the industry.
ChatGPT is called to be the super app of 2025 (and the future)
Without going any further, one of the pioneers in using that term was Elon Musk, who when he acquired Twitter already made it clear that one of his goals was to transform it into a ‘super app’ in the Chinese style. WeChatin which you could do everything: payments, send messages, videos and calls… all grouped in a single place, the now decimated X. We have also heard about superapp to refer to WhatsAppwhich was born as a simple messaging app but has long been much more.
The South African tycoon’s plan may be going smoothly, but the definition helps us define the strategy of embed a technology so deeply in the daily lives of its users that they end up using it for everything.
OpenAI has the tools and the fame. Furthermore, the new paradigm called to change everything is artificial intelligence and there the OpenAI product looks in the rearview mirror at Grok (Musk’s AI) and Meta AI. And not only in results, but also in popularity: using ChatGPT in WhatsApp is a win-win for the mainstream, despite having AI in the popular messaging app for months.
ChatGPT even in the soup. Well, OpenAI seems to be doing something similar with ChatGPT by launching different tools aimed at different profiles and needs: there is a search engine in ChatGPT that constitutes a blow to Google’s waterline, an advanced voice mode to speak with the chatbot, modalities of vision, a Canvas for collaborative writing and programming projects, a vision mode to work with images… and counting.
All around one thing: everything is ChatGPT with GPT-4o operating under the hood capable of generating text, audio, voice and image responses. And of course, not only on the computer, through a browser or app, but also on mobile devices and even integrated into the iPhone ecosystem.
And it makes sense: the ultimate goal of the OpenAI roadmap is achieve General Artificial Intelligence either AGIbringing together all these tools in a single agent that can perform more complex tasks for those who use it. And they are just around the corner: 2025, like explained its CEO Sam Altman. Bloomberg even revealed its code name: ‘Operator’ (operator) and its future ability to enter code, book flights or search the internet.
There are pending tasks. Although OpenAI has demonstrated its mastery in grabbing headlines and raising hype, it is not just a matter of arriving first: you also have to do it well. Thus, ChatGPT continues to have hallucination problems on the table, violates intellectual property, and offers disinformation and defamation responses. On the other hand, it still needs a huge amount of quality data to continue debugging. Although they are surely working on it, OpenAI is moving steadily towards its goal of make ChatGPT a super app.
